ラテン語 limes（境界線・国境）から。古代ローマでは帝国の防衛境界線を指した。関連語: preliminary（予備的な＝境界の前）、eliminate（排除する＝境界の外へ出す）。「ここまで」という境を示す語が「限界」の意味になった。
From Latin limes, meaning a boundary line or frontier. In Roman use, it often meant the edge of the empire or a defended border. From this sense of a marked boundary, English developed the idea of a point that cannot or should not be passed.
