古フランス語 despleier（des-「反対に」+ pleier「折る」）が語源。折りたたんだものを「広げて見せる」が原義で、展示や表示の意味に発展。関連語: deploy（展開する）、ply（折り目）。
Displays consists of display and the plural suffix -s. Display came through Old French despleier, formed from elements conveying the reversal of folding and thus the action of unfolding or spreading something out. From “unfold so that it can be seen,” the word developed senses of showing and exhibiting. It later became a noun for an electronic device that visibly presents information.
