古英語 ǣnig（any）+ hwǣr（where）の複合語。anyは「いずれかの」、whereは「どこ」で、合わせて「どこでも」。同根語にanywhere由来のnowhereやsomewhereがある。whereの語根はゲルマン祖語*hwar-で、疑問・不定の場所を示す。
