名詞の前に置いて、話し手と聞き手のあいだで何を指すかが分かっているもの、すでに話題に出たもの、世界に一つしかないものなどを特定するときに使う語です。日本語では文脈に応じて「その」「例の」「あの」などと訳されることもありますが、訳さないほうが自然な場合も多いです。
