古英語 sēon（見る）に由来し、ゲルマン祖語 *sehwaną、印欧祖語 *sekʷ-「追う・知覚する」に遡る。「目で追う」→「理解する」と意味が広がった。関連語: sight（視覚）、foresee（予見する）。
