人以外の物・動物・状況・出来事などを指す代名詞。前に出た内容を受けて「それ」と言うときに使うほか、天気・時間・距離・状況を述べるときの形式的な主語としても非常によく使われる。文脈によって具体的な指す内容が決まる語。
A pronoun used for a thing, animal, idea, or situation that is already known or has been mentioned. It is also used in common expressions about time, weather, distance, and general situations. It does not usually refer to a person.

he / she が人を指すのに対し、it は「人以外を受けるいちばん基本の代名詞」。物・動物・出来事・前の文全体まで受けられる。this / that が「これ・それ」と指して見せる感じなのに対し、it はいったん話題に出たものを静かに受け直す語。さらに It’s raining. / It’s 7 o’clock. / It’s far. のように、天気・時間・距離では内容より文の形を作る主語として超頻出。its, itself も同じ仲間としてまとめて覚えると定着しやすい。
Remember `it` as the basic small word that quietly points back to something already mentioned. Unlike `this` or `that`, it usually does not show; it simply carries the topic forward. It is also common in set patterns like weather, time, and distance: `It’s raining`, `It’s late`, `It’s far`.
