person は古フランス語 personne を経て、ラテン語 persona「役柄・人格」に由来する。明確な接頭辞分解はしにくいが、personal や personality も同根。もとは劇の「仮面や役」だった語が、外に現れる役割から「人」そのものを指すようになった。
