体や心で何かを感じ取るときや、自分の考えや印象を「…だと思う」と述べるときに使う動詞。疲れや不安のような状態を表すほか、that節を続けて意見をやわらかく言う形もよく使われる。口語では主観的な判断を控えめに示す、ごく基本的な語。

feel は「体や心で受け取って、そう思う」と覚えると動詞用法がまとまる。I feel tired は体が疲れを感じる、She feels that something is wrong. は心で受け取った印象から「おかしいと思う」。a soft feel のような名詞の「感触」ではなく、ここでは主語が何かを感じ取る動きです。think よりも断定がやわらかく、自分の感覚にもとづく判断として「感じる、思う」と訳すと自然です。

feel の語源・成り立ち Etymology
feel は古英語 felan「触れて知る」にさかのぼるゲルマン系の語。語幹 fel- には「触覚で確かめる」感覚があり、そこから体で感じる意味、さらに心で感じて「思う」意味へ広がった。feeling や unfeeling も同根で、判断がもともと「触れて確かめる感覚」と近かったと見えてくる。
Feel comes from Old English felan, associated with knowing through touch. Its meanings extended to bodily sensations and mental impressions.
