friday の語源・成り立ち Etymology
friday は古英語 Frigedag に由来し、Frige「女神フリッグ」+ day「日」で、もとは「フリッグの日」という意味です。day は today や weekday と同根で、ドイツ語 Freitag も同じ発想。曜日名に神話が生き残っていると分かる語です。
Friday comes from Old English Frigedag, meaning "Frigg's day." Frigg was a Germanic goddess, and the name follows the old custom of naming days after gods. The second part, day, is the same old Germanic word seen in today and weekday. German Freitag shows the same origin.
