Redoubts are small forts or strongly protected places used for defense, especially in military situations. The word can also be used more generally for places or groups that strongly protect a belief, tradition, or way of life.

redoubt は見た目が doubt に似ていますが、意味は無関係なのでまず切り離して覚えるのがコツ。語感としては fort や fortress、bastion の仲間で、単なる建物ではなく「敵の攻撃をしのぐための強固な防御拠点」。しかも redoubts と複数になると、戦場に築かれた複数の堡塁・防御陣地の情景が浮かびます。軍事文脈で defend, attack, capture, fortified などと一緒に出やすい語として覚えると定着しやすいです。
Do not connect `redoubt` with `doubt` just because they look similar. Learn it with fortress words like `fort`, `bastion`, and `fortified position`. In the plural, `redoubts` easily brings to mind several strong defensive points across a battlefield.

フランス語 redoute からイタリア語 ridotto（避難所）を経て、ラテン語 reductus（退いた）に遡る。re-（後ろへ）+ ducere（導く）が語根。関連語は reduce（縮小する）、conduct（導く）。「退避のための砦」が原義。
Redoubts came into English from French redoute, with deeper roots in Italian ridotto and Latin reductus. It is related to Latin reducere, from re- "back" and ducere "to lead." The earliest sense was a place to withdraw to for safety, and from that it came to mean a defensive fort or strongpoint; related English words include reduce and conduct.
