stopperはstop「止める」+ -er「もの」で、stopは古フランス語estopper、さらに俗ラテン語*stuppare「繊維で栓をする」に由来する。stoppageやstopcockと同根で、元は「動きを止める」より「穴をふさいで栓をする」感覚だったと分かる。
