arriveはラテン語ad-(～へ)+ripa(岸)が語源で、古フランス語ariver「岸に着く」を経て英語に。船が岸辺にたどり着くイメージから「到着する」の意味に。atで到達点を示す。関連語: river(川), riparian(川岸の)。
"Arrive" comes through Old French "ariver" from Latin parts meaning "to" and "shore" or "bank." It first gave the image of a ship reaching land, and from there its sense widened to any kind of reaching a place. In "arrive at," "at" marks the point reached.
