allegiance は古フランス語 ligeance「主君への忠義」から入り、liege「封建君主」に名詞語尾 -ance が付いた語です。liege や liegeman と並べると、ただ好意を持つのでなく『仕える相手に結びつくこと』が allegiance の忠誠だと見えてきます。
