liege の語源・成り立ち Etymology
liege は古フランス語 lige に由来し、さらにフランク語系 *ledig「自由な、他に縛られない」にさかのぼるとされます。もとは「ほかの主君に縛られない忠誠」を表し、そこからその忠誠を受ける「君主」の意へ移ったのが面白い点です。ドイツ語 ledig や liegeman が近縁です。
Liege comes from Old French lige and is thought to go back to a Frankish word meaning "free" or "not bound to another lord." At first it described a form of loyalty owed to only one lord. Later, the word shifted and could also name the lord who received that loyalty. A related form is liegeman.
