敵の城・都市・拠点などを軍が取り囲み、外部との連絡や補給を断って降伏を迫る軍事行動を指す名詞。長期間続くことも多く、直接攻撃だけでなく、食料や援軍を絶つことで相手を弱らせる作戦全体を表す。
A siege is a military attack in which an army surrounds a city, building, or castle and tries to force the people inside to give up. It usually lasts for a period of time and cuts off supplies or escape. The word can also be used more generally for a long period of pressure or attack.
