chairwoman は chair「椅子・議長職」と woman から成る語で、chair はギリシャ語 kathedra「座る場所」を経た語です。会議で“席を占める人”が転じて進行役を指すようになったため、肩書きとしての会長が生まれました。chairman、cathedral が関連語です。
