champion は古フランス語 champion「決闘の闘士」からで、後期ラテン語 campio「野の戦士」、さらにラテン語 campus「野原・戦う場」に由来します。関連語は campus, campaign。もともと「戦う人」なので、勝負を勝ち抜いた人という感覚から「優勝者・王者」の意味になりました。
The word comes from Old French champion, meaning a fighter in single combat, and Late Latin campio, connected with Latin campus, meaning "field" or "battleground." The idea of a fighter developed into that of someone who wins a contest.
