古英語 feohtan（戦う）に動作主を示す接尾辞 -er が付いた形。ゲルマン祖語 *fehtaną に遡る。関連語に fight（戦う）、fist（拳）がある。原義は「戦う者」で、第一次大戦頃から軍用機を指す用法が生まれ、「戦闘機」の意味が定着した。
Fighter is built from fight plus the agent ending -er, so it first meant simply "one who fights." Fight comes from Old English feohtan, from an older Germanic root. Later, especially around the time of World War I, fighter was also used for a military aircraft made for combat. It is related to fight, and possibly more distantly to fist.
