レスリング、柔術、総合格闘技などで、組みつき、投げ、寝技といった組み技を得意とする選手や人を指す語。文脈によっては、難しい問題や状況に粘り強く立ち向かう人を比喩的に表すこともある。

Grappler is built from grapple plus the ending -er. Grapple came through Old French from a root linked to hooks or grabbing tools, so the original image is of catching hold like a hook. From that sense, grappler came to mean a person who fights by seizing and holding.
