explication の語源・成り立ち Etymology
explication はラテン語 explicatio に由来し、元は explicare「折りたたんだものを広げる」。ex-「外へ」+ plicare「折る」で、explicit や complicate と同根だから、「説明」とは内容を一枚ずつ“開いて見せる”ことだとわかります。
Explication comes from Latin explicatio, from explicare, meaning "to unfold" or "unroll." It is made from ex- meaning "out" and plicare meaning "to fold." The idea moved from physically unfolding something to explaining it step by step, and it shares the same root as explicit and complicate.
