Explication is a careful explanation of the meaning of something, especially a text, idea, or theory. It is often used in academic writing, literature, and criticism. The word suggests a detailed and organized explanation, not just a simple comment.

explain や explicit を知っていると覚えやすい語。explanation が日常的な「説明」なら、explication は一段かたい語で、文章・理論・規則などの複雑な内容を、部分ごとに分けて丁寧に読み解く説明を指しやすい。単なる要約ではなく、筋道を立てて明示するイメージ。文学では literary explication の形で出やすく、「本文の意味を細かく解き明かす」と結びつけると残る。-tion は名詞語尾。implication とつづりも意味も紛らわしいので注意。

explication はラテン語 explicatio に由来し、元は explicare「折りたたんだものを広げる」。ex-「外へ」+ plicare「折る」で、explicit や complicate と同根だから、「説明」とは内容を一枚ずつ“開いて見せる”ことだとわかります。
Explication comes from Latin explicatio, from explicare, meaning "to unfold" or "unroll." It is made from ex- meaning "out" and plicare meaning "to fold." The idea moved from physically unfolding something to explaining it step by step, and it shares the same root as explicit and complicate.
