complicate はラテン語 com-「共に」+ plicare「折る」から来て、文字通りには「折り重ねる」です。implicit や explicit も同じ語根を含み、物事が何重にも畳まれて見通しにくくなる感じが「複雑にする」へつながります。
Complicate comes from Latin complicare, from com- "together" and plicare "to fold." Its original sense was "to fold together" or "to entwine." From that image, it came to mean making something tangled, layered, or hard to follow. Related words with the same root include implicit and explicit.
