throwback は throw「投げる」と back「後ろへ」の複合語で、もとは家畜が祖先に似た特徴を「後ろへ投げ返す」ように現すことから生まれました。overthrow や backward も同じ根を含み、「昔の型へ戻る」という先祖返りの感覚が語形にそのまま入っています。
