throwdownは句動詞throw downの名詞化で、throwは古英語þrawan「ねじる・回す」に遡る。回して放る感覚から「投げる」になり、downが加わって「投げ倒す」が「挑戦をたたきつける」へ発展し、「対決」の語感になった。関連語はthrow、overthrow。
Throwdown is a noun made from the phrasal verb throw down.
