Deism is the belief that a god created the universe but does not directly control events or perform miracles. It is often discussed in religion, philosophy, and history. The word usually refers to a view based more on reason and observation than on religious tradition.

-ism は『主義・思想』を表すので、まず deism は宗教名ではなく“考え方”の語だと押さえる。覚えるコツは、theism と atheism の間に置くこと。atheism は神を認めず、theism は神と宗教的教えを強く結びやすい。一方 deism は『神の存在は認めるが、奇跡・啓示・教会の権威には頼りすぎない』立場。理性で神を考える、少し距離を置いた神観だと思うと、理神論の意味が残りやすい。deist はその信奉者。
Use the ending `-ism` as your first clue: this is a belief system, not a person or an action. Remember it by placing it between `theism` and `atheism`. A `deist` accepts God, but leans more on reason than on church authority, miracles, or revelation.

deism はフランス語 déisme を経て、ラテン語 deus「神」に思想・主義を表す接尾辞 -ism が付いた語です。文字どおり「神についての主義」なので、奇跡や啓示より理性で神を認める理神論を指し、関連語に deity と divine があります。
