過酸化水素などの過酸化物を電子受容体として用い、さまざまな基質の酸化を触媒する酵素群。多くの生物に存在し、過酸化物の処理などに関与する。

peroxidase は peroxide「過酸化物」+ 酵素語尾 -ase から成る語です。peroxide は per-「過度に」+ oxide「酸化物」で、oxidize や oxidant も同根。過酸化物に作用する酵素だと分かるので、働きが語形にそのまま出ています。
