atheism は atheist（無神論者）とセットで覚えると定着しやすい語です。語尾の -ism は socialism, Buddhism のように「思想・立場」を表すことが多いので、「人」ではなく「考え方」だと整理するとよいです。中心になる語は theism（神の存在を信じる立場）で、a- が付くとその反対方向。さらに agnosticism は「神がいるかは分からない」という不可知論で、atheism の「信じない」とはずれる点に注意。belief, religion, existence of God の話題でよく出ます。

atheismはギリシャ語atheos「神を持たない」に、思想・主義を表す接尾辞-ismが加わった語。atheistやtheologyと同じtheos「神」を含み、先頭のa-が否定なので、「神という前提を外す立場」だと考えると意味が見えやすい。
Atheism comes from Greek atheos, meaning "without a god," plus the suffix -ism. The first part, a-, is a negative prefix, and theos means "god." So the word originally expressed the absence or rejection of gods, and later became the name of a belief position. Atheist and theology share the same root.
