神や宗教の存在を信じない人のことです。宗教的信仰を持たない哲学的立場をとる人を指します。
An atheist is a person who does not believe in any god or gods. The word is usually used when talking about religion, belief, or personal views about life. It describes a belief position, not a nationality or culture.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
theology（神学）や theism（有神論）の theo-/the- を見たら「神・宗教」まわりだと連想すると覚えやすいです。そこに否定の a- が付いた atheist は「神を信じる側ではない人」。特に agnostic と混同しやすいですが、agnostic は「神がいるか断言しない・わからない人」、atheist は「信じない人」寄りです。文では an atheist と人を指し、atheism はその立場・思想名だとセットで押さえると定着します。
Notice the `a-` at the start, which often gives a negative idea, and connect `theist` with `theism`. That makes `atheist` easier to store as the opposite side of a believer. Also keep it separate from `agnostic`, which is more about not being sure.
