swathe は古英語 swaþian「くるむ、包む」に由来し、もとは帯状の布でぐるりと巻く動作を指しました。同系の swaddle「産着でくるむ」や swath「帯状のひと筋」と比べると、「細長いもので覆う」という核が見えます。だから単なる包むより「巻き包む」に近い語です。
