carillon はフランス語 carillon からで、古フランス語 carignon、さらに俗ラテン語 *quadrinionem「4つ組」にさかのぼるとされます。quarter・quartet と同じ『4』の語根をもち、もとは『4つの鐘の組』だったため、後に組鐘全体を指す語になりました。
Carillon came into English from French carillon. It is usually traced back through Old French to a Late Latin form linked to the idea of a group of four, the same number root seen in English words like quarter and quartet. It seems to have first meant a set of four bells, then later grew to mean a whole set of tuned bells.
