combatantはフランス語combattantを経て、俗ラテン語combattere「共に激しく打ち合う」にさかのぼります。com-「共に」+ battre「打つ」の組み合わせで、battleやdebateにも同じ「打ち合い」の語根が残ります。
Combatant came through French combattant and goes back to Late Latin combattere, meaning "to fight together." It is built from com- "together" and battere "to beat."
