解説 Definition
刈り取り後の農地に残された穀物を拾い集める人。中世ヨーロッパでは貧困者が生計を立てるための重要な職業でした。
A gleaner is someone who collects small amounts of something that are left behind after the main part has been taken. The word first referred to people gathering crops left in a field after harvest. It can also be used more generally for someone who gathers bits of information from different places.

-er が付くと「〜する人」なので、まず gleaner は glean する人と押さえる。glean は gather や collect より、「あちこちに残ったものを少しずつ拾い集める」感触が強い。畑の落ち穂を拾う場面を中心に、現代では glean information from reports のように情報を断片から拾う比喩でも使える。最初から大量に集める collector や harvester ではなく、取りこぼしを丹念に集める人、という絵で覚える。見た目が似る gleaming とは別語。
The ending `-er` tells you it is a person, so a `gleaner` is someone who `gleans`. `Glean` has the feeling of collecting little bits left behind, not gathering a lot at once. Picture someone carefully picking up leftover grain, or later, small pieces of information from different reports.
