gleaning は glean「落ち穂を拾う」+ -ing。glean は古フランス語 glaner に由来し、刈り取りのあと畑に残った穂を少しずつ集めることを言った。gleaner も同根で、「残りものを拾い集める」姿が、知識を丹念に拾う比喩にもつながる。
Gleaning comes from glean plus the suffix -ing. Glean came into English from Old French glaner, which meant to gather leftover ears of grain after harvesting. The idea later widened from picking up scattered crops to carefully collecting small pieces of information.
