pretender はラテン語 praetendere「前に差し出す・言い張る」にさかのぼり、pre-「前に」+ tend「伸ばす」+ -er で成ります。pretend や extend と同じ tend をもち、『主張を前へ突き出す人』が、王位請求者や、転じてなりすましを表すのが見えてきます。
