bomber は bomb＋-er で、「爆弾を落とすもの」を表す語です。bomb はイタリア語 bomba、さらにギリシャ語 bombos「ぶうんという響き」にさかのぼり、bombard も同根です。つまり bomber は、音まね語から育った「轟音をもたらす兵器」の延長にある語だと分かります。
Bomber was formed in English from bomb + -er, meaning something or someone connected with bombs. Bomb came through French and Italian bomba, from Greek bombos, an imitative word for a deep booming or buzzing sound. The idea moved from a loud noise to an explosive weapon, and then to a machine or person that drops bombs. Bombard shares the same root.
