networking は network＋-ing。network は古英語由来の net「網」と work「働き」から成り、もとは人や情報を網の目のようにつなぐこと。work を含む workshop や framework を思うと、関係づくりも「働かせる網」だと見えてきます。
Networking is built from network plus the ending -ing. Network combines net, from Old English, with work, and originally referred to something arranged like a web or mesh. The image later shifted from a physical net to a system of connections, especially among people or information. Networking therefore came to mean the activity of building and using those connections.
