フランス語 jeter（投げる）から。さらにラテン語 jactare（投げる）に遡る。元は「噴出する水流・気流」を意味し、そこから噴射推進の航空機を指すようになった。関連語: eject（放出する）、project（投げ出す→計画）。
Jet entered English through French jet, related to jeter, “to throw.” The French verb ultimately goes back to Latin iactare, an intensive form of iacere, “to throw.” The noun first referred to something thrown or emitted, especially a stream of water or other fluid. With the development of jet propulsion, it was applied to the stream of exhaust and then, by shortening jet aircraft, to the aircraft itself.
