まず day が見えるので「日」に関係する語だと固定し、残りの yester- を『一つ前』の印として覚えると残りやすいです。yesteryear（過ぎ去った昔）にも同じ yester- が入るので、「今日から一日だけ戻す」感覚で yesterday＝昨日。会話では I saw him yesterday. のように前置詞なしでそのまま時を言う形が非常に多く、yesterday morning / yesterday afternoon などとも結びつきます。tomorrow と対で時間軸に並べ、today の左が yesterday、右が tomorrow と置くと定着しやすいです。
