today は古英語 tō dæg「この日に」に由来し、to + day と分けられるが、ここでの to は古い「…に」の働き。weekday や daybreak も day の仲間。直訳は「この日に」で、一日の区切りを時間の場としてつかむ感覚が、そのまま名詞の「今日」に残っている。
