Understood is the inherited past form of understand, from Old English understandan. The verb combines under with stand, although under in this old formation does not simply carry its usual modern spatial sense of “beneath.” Its historical development produced the sense of grasping or comprehending something. The irregular change from stand to stood is preserved inside the compound, producing understand–understood.
