ラテン語 selectio（選び出すこと）から。動詞 seligere は se-（離れて）+ legere（選ぶ・集める）に分解できる。legere からは collect（集める）や elegant（選び抜かれた→優雅な）も派生。「他から離して選び取る」が原義で、複数の中から意図的に一つを選ぶニュアンスがある。
Selection comes from Latin selectio, from the verb seligere, meaning "to choose out." That verb combines se- "apart" with legere "to gather, choose." So the original idea was choosing something by separating it from others; the same root appears in collect and elegant.
