excerpt は「作品や文章の一部を、そのまま切り出して見せるもの」と押さえると覚えやすいです。summary が全体を短く要約したものなのに対し、excerpt は元の表現を保ったままの抜粋。an excerpt from a novel, an excerpt from the interview の形でよく出ます。動詞 extract に少し近い感覚がありますが、excerpt はとくに本・記事・映像・音声など“元の作品の一部分”を示す場面で使う、と結びつけると定着します。
Do not mix it up with `summary`. A `summary` retells the whole thing shortly, but an `excerpt` is an actual piece taken out from the original. Think of `an excerpt from a novel` or `an excerpt from the interview`.

excerptはラテン語excerptumに由来し、ex-「外へ」＋carpere「摘み取る」に分けられます。もとは本文から必要な箇所を「つまみ出す」ことなので、抜粋が切り取りではなく選び抜きだとわかります。excerptedやexcerptionも同根です。
From Latin `excerptum`, from `ex-`, meaning out, and `carpere`, meaning to pluck or pick. The image is of picking out parts from a larger text. That is how the word came to mean a selected passage rather than the whole work. Related forms include `excerpted`.
