dayは古英語dæg、さらにゲルマン祖語*dagazにさかのぼり、古い核には「明るく熱を帯びた時」があります。だからdayは単なる24時間ではなく、もともと夜と対になる「光の出ている時間」を強く指しました。dailyやdaylightも同根です。
