unpromising の語源・成り立ち Etymology

unpromising は古英語由来の否定接頭辞 un- と promising から成り、promise は古フランス語経由でラテン語 promittere「前もって告げる・約束する」に由来する。つまり『良い結果を約束してくれない』がそのまま『見込みのない』。関連語は promise, compromise。

Unpromising combines the Old English negative prefix un- with promising. Promise came through Old French from Latin promittere, meaning "to send forth" or "to promise." The idea developed from "not giving a good promise" to "not likely to succeed or turn out well."
