anti-はギリシャ語で「反対」、Semite は聖書名セムにちなむ語で、-ism は「主義」を示す語尾です。直訳すると「セム系の人々への反対」で、近代には特にユダヤ人への敵意を指す語になりました。antibody や racism も同じ anti-、-ism を含みます。
Antisemitism is built from anti-, meaning "against," Semite, and -ism, meaning a belief or system. Semite comes from Shem, a name in the Bible, and was once used for certain peoples and languages of the Near East. In modern history, the word narrowed to mean hostility especially toward Jewish people.
