ラテン語 ratio「計算・理性」を土台に、ir-「否定」+ rational「理性的な」でできた語。ratio には「数えて筋道を立てる」感覚があり、そこから外れるものが irrational、つまり不合理となる。reason や ratio も同じ語根につながる。
