congratulate はラテン語 congratulari に由来し、con-「共に」+ gratulari「喜びを述べる」から成る。核の grat- は gratus「うれしい・ありがたい」と同じで、grateful や grace と響き合うため、「相手の喜びを自分も共に喜ぶ」が「祝う」になった。
