colt は古英語 colt に遡る古いゲルマン系の語で、もとは「若いロバ・馬」ほどの広い意味でした。接頭辞や接尾辞はなく、意味がしだいに「子馬」、特に雄の子馬へと絞られた語です。coltish も同根で、「若く跳ね回る感じ」が語感に残っています。
