雌鶏

henは古英語hennに由来し、さらにゲルマン祖語 *hanjo- にさかのぼる、雌鳥を指すとても古い語。ドイツ語 Henne やオランダ語 hen も同根で、鶏一般ではなく「めんどり」を切り分ける基本語だから意味がぶれない。
Hen comes from Old English henn and goes back to an old Germanic root for a female chicken. It has close relatives in other Germanic languages, such as German Henne and Dutch hen. Because it has long referred specifically to the female bird, its meaning has stayed very stable over time. It is one of the oldest everyday animal words in English.
