尊敬する人物や大きな功績を残した相手に対して、敬意や感謝を表すこと。言葉や行動で直接たたえる場合にも、記念碑や式典、作品などを通してその存在や業績を称える場合にも使われる、やや格式のある表現。

「homage」は古フランス語 hommage に由来し、さらにラテン語 homo/homin-「人」へさかのぼります。もとは主君に「私はあなたの人です」と忠誠を誓う行為で、そこから敬意や賛辞の意味に広がりました。関連語は homicide と hominid です。
Homage came through Old French hommage and goes back to Latin homo, meaning "human being" or "man."
