敬礼

軍人などが相手や旗に敬意を示すためにする定まった動作や姿勢を指す名詞。転じて、人物や功績に敬意を表す言葉や行為をいうこともあり、式典や儀礼などの改まった場面で使われることが多い。やや硬い文脈で現れる語である。

salute はラテン語 salutare「健康を祈る」に由来し、語幹 salus は「健康・無事」を意味しました。相手の無事を願う言葉が「あいさつ」や「敬礼」になり、salutation や salutary にも同じ salu- が見えます。
